Sogecoa for more than investment in Malawi

By Rodney Majawa – Mana.

Sogecoa Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre is set to officially open its doors come mid-March.2020, General Manager for the hospitality facility, Derrick Xu told Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Wednesday whilst underscoring three core values for their existence in Blantyre and beyond.

“The imposing hospitality complex will very soon create more than 200 job opportunities to locals, besides adding beauty to the city’s general outlook, cementing the already existing bilateral relations and of course boosting up the country’s tourism and forex as we host both local and international clients,” he said.

Xu said the complex mainly consists of three major departments including the hyper supermarket, the hotel itself, various conference rooms and casino, noting that the largest conference room can accommodate not less than 600 people with imported and perfectly furnished facilities.

He added that the hospitality set up was currently short listing names of those who successfully attended interviews recently and is ready to hire not more than 200 locals by end of February, 2020.

Xu said employing locals is aimed at face-lifting and building up livelihoods and the cordial relations with Sogecoa group of companies, whilst dismissing false claims that the complex was meant to be dominated by international workers.

“Basically, we are here to invest and complement government’s ongoing efforts to build and boost up beauty and the country’s general outlook and not necessarily into entrepreneurship as others might imagine,” he added.

Sogecoa Golden Peacock Hotel Operations Manager, Tonny Zhu said the hotel would make deliberate efforts to have accessible to locals of all levels at reasonable rates to accelerate local tourism.

He said observed that other outlets are too ‘prohibitive’ to locals, but that Sogecoa Hotel shall be open to individuals and organizations of all classes; hence, the idea of building up the already existing bilateral relations.

The Operations Manager disclosed that he has already travelled countrywide and even beyond to appreciate the local rates; assuring that Sogecoa’s rates would be attractive, despite its imposing outlook in the city.

He said that the imposing hospitality industry is worth US$50 million.

Zhu said that Sogecoa is a China-based firm comprising various entities globally, including Sogecoa Golden Peacock Hotel and Sogecoa Chileka in Malawi which has just finished rehabilitating Chileka Airport in Blantyre.

Xu said ‘perfection’ is one of the organization’s core values; hence, a bit of the delay; “otherwise, the hotel is yet to receive another set of furniture befitting the complex.”
