Salima First Grade Magistrate court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced a man identified as Chepetsani Wyson to 10 years imprisonment with hard labor for defiling a 10 year old girl.
Public Relations Officer for Salima police, Jacob Khembo said the court, through state prosecutor, Sergeant Inspector Jean Chilombo, heard that the convict, who operates a bicycle taxi, defiled the girl on January 5, this year.
Khembo said Wyson managed to entice the girl whom he took on his bicycle taxi to his house where he defiled her.
“Appearing in court, he pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him which made the state prosecutor to parade seven witnesses who testified against him,” said Khembo.
The convict, in mitigation, asked the court to be lenient saying he takes care of orphans and that his parents were old.
First Grade Magistrate, Alex Kamtiki granted the state prosecutor’s prayer for stiffer punishment and sentenced Wyson to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour to deter other would-be offenders.
Wyson hails from Chagunda Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kambwiri in Salima.
