Bus driver dies in road accident

By Gracian Jeke –  Mana.

Coaches driver, Joseph Maganga, died on Sunday in Mzuzu after the bus he was driving collided with an overturning tipper at Dunduzu on the M1 Road, injuring 18 others in the process.

Mzuzu Central Hospital spokesperson, Dr. Arnold Kayira, confirmed the death, adding that two women and the tipper’s driver were admitted for internal injuries and fractures while fifteen passengers from the bus were treated as outpatients.

Mzuzu Police Spokesman, Paul Tembo, said it started when the driver for the tipper registration number MZ 2404, Mavuto Zimba, 42, lost control of the vehicle causing it to start rolling sideways.

In the process of rolling, the tipper hit a Sososo Coach which was travelling from Mzuzu to Karonga with 35 passengers.

“The tipper was coming from the direction of Ekwendeni heading for Mzuzu loaded with gravel. When it reached Nyang’oma Meru Filling station at Dunduzu around Mzuzu University Tourism Campus, the driver lost control as the vehicle was descending.

“Eventually the tipper started overturning sideways and it hit a Yutong bus belonging to Sososo Coaches registration number BLK 5663 driven by Joseph Maganga. The bus was coming from the opposite direction going to Karonga,” Tembo said.

He said following the impact of the accident, Maganga was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital.
