Vendors in Chikwawa have commended the youth for ensuring that markets in the district have adequate waste bins as one way of promoting sanitation.
Speaking Thursday when receiving waste bins from Maseya Youth Network and Chikwawa District Youth Office, Bereu Market Chairperson, Smart Kamphiripiri said what the two stakeholders have done will help keep the market clean and prevent environmental hazard.
He described the donation as important saying it will go a long way in improving health and sanitation in the market.
“We promise to use the waste bins accordingly. The development will help promote health among ourselves. With this, sanitation will improve,” said Kamphiripiri.
Maseya Youth Network Spokesperson, Chifundo Chokha said the organisation will keep checking to ensure that the waste bins are being used.
“There are some people who choose to dispose litter anywhere. We are conducting Adolescent Girls in Climate Change and the donation is part of that to ensure that it is effective,” said Chokha.
Chikwawa District Youth Officer, MacNell Shire said his office is empowering young people to have a role in protecting environment hence the donation.
“After observing that different markets in Chikwawa do not have waste bins, these young people decided to provide them. It is my hope that sanitation will improve in the markets.
“As Adolescent Girls in Climate Change initiative is being implemented, young people will have enough knowledge in managing the environment, “said Shire.
Councilor for Makhuwira North Ward, Alex Zige Mlonya is happy that young people are taking part in promoting health and sanitation in all markets across the district.
