Cyclist killed in road accident

A 65 year old cyclist died on Friday after being hit by a car at Likulezi Trading Centre in Phalombe District.

The deceased was identified as Benard Silinao who hailed from Daundi Village, Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe district was pronounced dead upon arrival at Holy Family Mission Hospital.

According to Deputy Police Publicist for Phalombe, Sergeant, Jimmy Kapanja, the accident happened around 4 pm when the decease run into a Toyota Hilux registration number MJ 464 which was driving from Mulanje to Phalombe with four passengers on board.

“A statement from the driver Smart Mandala, 48 shows that while passing the trading centre the cyclist unexpectedly entered the main road from the earth road, trying to cross the road and there was a stationary Lorry parked nearby, which left the driver with no choice but to hit the cyclist,” he said.

Police in the district are advising road users to exercise caution before crossing roads and while passing trading centres.
