A 34-year-old Fisherman Friday drowned in Lake Malawi in Mangochi as he tried to rescue a canoe that was being swept away by strong winds from the shore where it was moored.

The incident occurred at Mpwepwe Fisheries Beach where the man, Jaffali Mussah, was left to look after the canoe at the shore while his employer, Adam Yusuf, went into the lake to cast nets.

Mangochi Police Spokesperson, Sub-Inspector, Amina Daudi, confirmed the incident saying Mussah lost balance as he struggled to rescue the canoe and he drowned.

“Mussah was overpowered by the strong winds and he was washed away before drowning in the lake,” she explained on Saturday, adding: “His fellow fishermen tried to rescue him but when they finally retrieved him from the water, Mussah was already dead.”She said post-mortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital indicated that Mussah had died due to suffocation.Mussah’s body is being kept at Mangochi District Hospital mortuary waiting identification by relatives since, according to Daudi, none of the deceased’s friends, including the employer; know Mussah’s relatives or their contacts.

Meanwhile Mangochi Police have appealed to the public to notify any nearest Police formation if the particulars of the deceased in question belong to a familiar person.

Mussa came from Kapesi Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Kalumbu in Dedza.
