Kabuthu primary learners ask for washrooms

By Ireen Kayira – Mana.

Learners at Kabuthu primary school in Nsalu have asked for construction of washrooms to assist girls.

The request came from one of the female learners on Saturday in Lilongwe when Bwaila Lions Club donated sanitary pads to female learners at the school.

One of the leaners, Agnes Tembo, said having no washrooms is a big challenge to them hence some of them prefer to stay at home when menstruating thereby missing classes.

Bwaila Lions Club president, Innocent Jumbe said the Club would look into the matter and come up  with a solution to the problem.

He said it is the Club’s wish to support the girl child to remain in school which is why they have assisted them with sanitary pads.

“We do not want girls to be absent from school because they do not have sanitary pads for their hygiene,” said Jumbe.

He said they hope that the sanitary pads will help encourage the learners to attend classes throughout and boost their performance so that they compete favourably with their male counterparts.

Head teacher for the primary school, Fackson Chipalasa said the sanitary pads would go a long way in helping the female learners at the school.

Most female Learners when menstruating absent themselves from school and this affects their performance.

Chipalasa therefore added that the school really needs washrooms as it does not have any at the moment.

“Most schools that have surrounded this area have washrooms but Kabuthu is one of the few schools that do not have washrooms,” he said.

Apart from donating sanitary pads, the Club also had a motivational talk with both male and female learners as well as planting trees around the school.
