Police in Mulanje are keeping in custody a 64-year-old man identified as Enock Mongolo for collecting revenue illegally at Mpala Market in the district.
Mulanje Police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira said Mongolo snubbed a portion of Mpala Market and collected revenue from it regardless of the fact that it was the district council’s responsibility to handle all operations of the market including revenue collection.
“We received a complaint from Mulanje District Council that revenue collection at the market had decreased since 2019 because an unidentified person had been collecting revenue at the market.
“In trying to clear the mist, investigations were conducted which revealed that Mongolo had forcibly taken over management of part of the market such that it was difficult for the council to follow the revenue collection,” he said.
Ngwira said following this, police officers arrested Mongolo on February 17, 2019 and is expected to appear in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
Mongolo hails from Mphusu Village in the area of Senior Chief Mabuka in Mulanje.
