Police in Salima on Monday intercepted 61 bags and 45 plastic bags of Indian hemp at Mlamba area along Salima-Balaka road in the district where they had mounted a checkpoint.

Salima police publicist, Jacob Khembo confirmed the incident, saying they also arrested a 35 year old man, identified as Chingeni Kadammanja, for being found in possession of the contraband.

He said Kadammanja, who hails from Mundiwa village Traditional Authority (TA) Machinjiri in Blantyre was charged with being found in possession of Indian hemp which is contrary to section 19 sub-section 1 of dangerous drugs act of the Penal code.

“Kadammanja was arrested at the road block after well-wishers tipped off the police saying that they saw him carrying huge amount of Indian hemp in his bongo minibus. He was on his way to Blantyre where he is based,” said Khembo.
