THYOLO DISTRICT COUNCIL CONDUCTS CLEAN UP EXERCISE

By Beni Bamusi – Mana
Thyolo District Council on Friday observed national cleanup day that was launched by President Lazarus Chakwera to ensure the country has sustainable environment management and waste disposal systems.
Speaking during the exercise, District Commissioner for Thyolo Rosemary Nawasha described the importance of keeping the environment clean as a pillar in the fight against Cholera and other water borne diseases.
“Currently we do not have any Cholera case in the district due to improvement of health and sanitation. Therefore, the council is encouraging all communities and those that are patronizing the market to keep every place clean.” she said.
But Nawasha expressed worry that community members are not taking part in the exercise saying this means the campaign has not yet been adopted by community members.
Chairperson for Thyolo District Market, Evance Kachingwe has since commended the council for the exercise saying it is improving cleanliness in the market.
He has since condemned the malpractice of selling merchandise along the road by some vendors saying the tendency has potential to cause accidents.
