Dedza District Council Principal Administration Officer, Moses Jere has called upon people in the district to take part in the national clean-up exercise, saying good hygiene was a responsibility for all.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) during a sweeping exercise at Bembeke Market Friday, he said everyone must make sure that they are living in a clean environment to prevent disease outbreaks and promote good health.

“As you know, this initiative was introduced by President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and it requires each and every one of us to be cleaning our surroundings every fortnight, to promote good hygiene. It is very important that we take it seriously by participating where ever we are as responsible citizens,” Jere said.

He thanked various local leaders for mobilizing their people to clean their localities, saying since the initiative was launched; the district has been doing well in terms of citizen participation.

Bembeke Market Treasurer, Safaliano Huwa thanked the council for organizing the exercise.

He said the market does not have enough cleaners and cleaning equipment hence waste management becomes an issue.

“However, with these sweeping exercises, we have seen a big improvement in terms of hygiene as our premises are always clean,” Huwa added.
