Government hailed for fostering environmental protection

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural resource ( LUANAR) has commended government on measures taken to protect the environment in the country.

This comes at a time the world is to commemorate the World Environment Day which falls on June 5 every year.

Head of Forestry Department at Luanar,  Dr. Daud Kachamba on Wednesday told Malawi News Agency that despite facing numerous challenges in protecting the environment government has put in place measures to make sure that the environment is protected.

“Let me say the government has done quite alot to put fundamental frameworks in place including institutions and policies and that government is also a signatory to alot of key environmental treaties,” he said.

However, Kachamba said despite making these strides, there are several challenges that could be solved which the environment is facing, citing lack of proper alternatives to aid the natural resource-reliant households to adopt.

He said as a result, it leads to plunder of natural resources which seem to be the only attractive alternative.

“It could be better if some alternatives are made availabe to those households that rely on natural resources so that they adopt them, otherwise, there will be pressure on our environment,” said Kachamba.

The environmental advocate said if some steps are taken towards providing alternative sources of fuelwood, the environment can come back to life assuming there are no  natural disasters.

This year’s commemorations of World Environment Day will be on 5 June under the theme investing in biodiversity, a key to sustainable livelihoods.
