Government promises soft requirements to sustain the education sector

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Agnes Nyalonje has promised to come up with minimum requirements to sustain education sector in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

She made the commitment on Friday during a meeting with Association of Private Universities of Malawi (APUMA) at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.

Nyalonje admitted that Private Universities in the country have greatly been affected with the closure of schools hence the promise to find other alternatives to bail out the schools  from other challenges being faced.

“Private Universities perform a very key role in this country. We have five Public Universities and 25 Private Universities and those 25 offers education to 18, 000 learners. They have a capacity to expand if some of the challenges being faced are dealt with.

“Some of the problems faced by the Private Universities,  l promise to find other ways on how to mitigate the effect of Covid-19 to the education sector by talking to other relevant stakeholders like Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19,” she said. 

The Minister said some of the challenges needs long term measures while others could be dealt with in a short period of time.

“Government will focus on short term measures for that l believe we can build a relationship that can unlock the potential of boosting the education sector regardless of Covid-19,” She added 

Chairperson for Private Universities in of Malawi who is also Vice Chancellor for Catholic University of Malawi, Dr Fr. George Buleya asked government to provide a roadmap on when schools would be opened to address the request for banks moratorium on loan serving to be continued and support for E-learning just to mention are few.

“We are calling for government to ask Banks to extend the moratorium for as long as Universities and colleges remained closed.

“We are very assured that some crucial issues will be dealt with,” he said. 

During the week, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology had a number of familiarization tour in the southern region just to appreciate the status of education sector from different Departments in the country.
