MZIMBA CHIEF CONCERNED WITH MORAL DECAY AMONG YOUTHS

By Monalisa Nyirenda – Mana

Group Village Headman (GVH) Amon Moyo in Mzimba has expressed worries over a growing trend of moral decay among youths in the district, who are reported to be indulging in premarital sex as well as alcohol and drug abuse.

Speaking on Tuesday, during a consultative meeting with stakeholders on ways to regulate youths’ behaviour, GVH Amon Moyo said the youths have turned forests in the district into hideouts for indulging in sex and other illicit activities.

“Most youths in the district go to the forests on the pretext of studies yet their main reason is to have sex and consume alcohol and drugs. There is therefore need to ban youths from visiting the places such that anyone found there should be charged with trespassing,” Moyo said.

The chief appealed to parents and all relevant stakeholders to join hands in addressing the issue saying it is affecting youths behaviour and leading to their poor performance in school.

Public Relations Officer for Mzimba police, Peter Botha agreed with GVH Amon Moyo, saying establishment of by-laws would reduce moral decadence among the youth.

“As we are waiting for the enactment of by-laws, police will enhance patrols in all areas where it is suspected that youths are committing different offences,” Botha said.

Executive Director for Mzimba Youth Organization, Moses Nkhana asked government to construct recreation centres where young people can acquire skills and get sexual reproductive health education.

Mzimba South Health office STI Prevention coordinator, Dan Kwacha recently revealed that the district registered 650 cases of sexually transmitted infections between January and March this year.
