Law maker for Dowa Ngala Constituency Arthur Sungitsa, express worries over the extent of the maize fields that have been attacked by the fall armyworms in the district, Sungitsa said the development could potentially affect his people as they may not harvest according to the expectations.
“Yes it is true there is serious outbreak of fall army worms, almost each and every field here in Kawangala is affected and we really need quick intervention every farmer here is so worried, as am talking to you i have just visited some affected fields, there is nothing good at all, a thing which is casting doubts if this year’s farm produce can significantly end the food shortage crisis in the district, quick intervention is really needed here” Sungitsa uttered.
Meanwhile, Dowa district Agriculture office confirmed that indeed, most parts of the district are facing fall armyworm challenges.
According to Malawian agriculture expert Tamani Nkhono-Mvula, the problem has been relatively the same compared to last farming season.
