Lilongwe City Council (LCC) ground workers have returned to their normal duties after boycotting their work for two days.
One of the LCC ground workers who opted for anonymity told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that they conducted a sit-in on Friday, August 31, 2018 forcing their bosses to increase their salaries.
“We staged a sit-in on Friday as we wanted our superiors to increase our salaries because we have stayed for many years without salary increment,” said the ground worker.
She added that they started claiming for the salary increment some years ago saying that they wanted their salary to be increased with 25 percent which the authorities agreed however they were not fulfilling the agreement.
The ground worker said that with the sit-in which they conducted, their salaries have been increased with 25 per cent and she said that the salary increment has motivated them to return to their normal duties.
She said her salary has been adjusted to K 55, 000 from K 44, 000 that she was getting before the increment. However, she said the workers have agreed to stage another sit-in if they will not receive their newly salary this month (September).
“We are happy that our salaries have been increased and we hope will receive the new salary this month, if not, we will stage another strike,” she said.
For several attempts, Lilongwe City Council Public Relations Officer, Tamara Chafunya did not answer phone calls from this reporter to comment on the matter-Mana
