Muluzi hails Catholic Church, Islam for education, health development

By Kondwani Magombo – Mana.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) President and President Prof. Peter Muthatika’s running mate in the forthcoming fresh election, Atupele Muluzi, on Sunday applauded the Roman Catholic Church and Islam for promoting education and health services in Mangochi

Muluzi, who stormed Mangochi in a campaign trail, said during the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regime, the government machinery was bent on suppressing education in the district but the Catholic Church and Islam stood firm.

He said the MCP government viewed educated people in the district as threats to the leadership as evidenced in the case of Masauko Chipembere who was well educated and was “eliminated” for holding a diverse view.

“The Catholic Church and Islam have made tremendous contributions towards education and health in Mangochi and across the country,” said Muluzi.

He added: “We shall, forever be very grateful to Bishop Assolari, may his soul rest in peace, for his contribution towards promoting education and health services, especially here in Mangochi.”

Muluzi congregated with the Catholics at Mangochi St. Augustine Cathedral in the morning where he made a donation of K5 million to the Church.

He later held a meeting with Muslim leaders before holding the much anticipated mega rally at St. Augustine 3 Primary School Ground in the afternoon.

On Politics, Muluzi thanked people in Mangochi for their support and he urged them to come out in large numbers on June 23 and vote for President Prof. Peter Mutharika.

He said the Mutharika government has a lot of development projects earmarked for Mangochi and that they can only be fulfilled if Mutharika, and no other, continues to rule the country.

Said Muluzi: “I can assure you that Malawi Congress Party will never change for the better; what the party has demonstrated over the past eleven months since we voted in 2019 is enough proof of what they are and will always be. Vote for a renewed hope, vote for APM.”

Earlier, Sub-TA Mambo, who spoke on behalf of Senior Chief Mponda, assured Muluzi that all chiefs in Mangochi will rally behind the DPP-UDF Alliance and that they will urge their subjects to follow suit.

Mambo said giving Mutharika a vote is the only way the chiefs and their subjects in Mangochi can say ‘thank you’ for all the developments that Mangochi has had under the DPP-led government.

Other speakers at the rally included UDF Vice President for the East, who is also Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovations, Lillian Patel, DPP Regional Governor for the East, Julius Paipi and Mangochi Central MP, Victoria Kingston.
