The Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) on Tuesday donated COVID-19 preventive materials such as hand sanitizers, soap, hand washing buckets, basins and stands worth K6.5 million to Mangochi District Hospital.
SRWB Chairperson, Luther Mambala, said the Board felt duty bound to make the donation to ensure that its customers are safe and healthy.
Mambala, who is a member of the Presidential Task Force on CONVID-19, described the pandemic as a public health disaster that has left the whole world devastated and he urged Malawians to follow prescribed health guidelines.
“I was among those who could not believe that COVID-19 was real but after being appointed in the Presidential Task Force and when I looked at the alarming figures, I realized how serious the pandemic was,” explained Mambala.
He said the SRWB would continue to support Mangochi District Hospital in any way possible given available resources.
According to the SRWB chairperson, the Board has donated similar items to thirteen district hospitals of , Balaka, Machinga, Chirazulu, Thyolo, Neno, Phalombe, , and Zomba Mental, among others.
Mangochi District Hospital Patron, MacDonald Gondwe, described the SRWBs donation as timely, saying the hospital lacked a lot of consumables to be used in all its health facilities across the district.
Gondwe appealed for more support from partners in the district especially in the areas of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other consumables such as hand washing soap and hand sanitizers.
Mangochi registered one positive COVID-19 case and more than 25 samples have so far been collected and tested, while over 80 people have been on surveillance, according to the District Health Office.
Recently, the district received over 90 people who returned home from South Africa and they were escorted to their respective homes where they are apparently living in self quarantine until the 14-day incubation period elapses.
