Tourism department mull over establishing a new public beach in Nkhata Bay

The Department of Tourism in the north says it intends to establish a public beach about two kilometres from Sanga Turn-Off to the shores of Lake Malawi in Nkhata Bay District.

Speaking Wednesday when he briefed Malawi News Agency reporters at the agency’s regional office, Regional Tourism Officer for the North, Japhet Kuweluza, said his department intends to establish a new beach to enhance investment in the tourism industry.

“We have already identified the area which has the potential to be turned into a tourist attraction area. The place is locally well known as Sanga and it is about two kilometers away from Sanga Turn-Off along the Nkhata Bay –Chintheche M5 Road,” said Kuweluza.

He said the department is waiting for government to release funds which will be paid to inhabitants of the area as compensation fees because there will be need to have the people relocated to another area.

“The place has natural untapped virgin sands, suitable for tourism activities,” he said.

Kuweluza then called on private potential investors to corroborate with government in developing the area which he said is suitable for facilities such as, hotels, lodges, inns and other tourist attraction amenities.

“Northern Region has only two hotels namely Mzuzu Sunbird Hotel and Grand Palace Hotel, hence my appeal to players in the tourism industry to invest at Sanga Beach as we strive to take the country’s tourism industry to greater heights,” he said.-Mana
