We also need protection- sex workers

Salima police in collaboration with family planning association of Malawi FPAM have joined hands in the fight against abuse which sex workers face during their day to day work.

This was disclosed on Monday during a meeting which Salima police station organized with female sex workers and other stakeholders including FPAM,msamala as well as central for human rights and rehabilitation CHRR.

Speaking in an interview after the meeting chairperson for Malawi police women network in salima inspector Tryness Tcheleko said there is need to protect sex workers from various abuse as well as to easy the detection of the robbers as these sex workers welcome different visitors.

“Sex workers have the capability to detect robbers as they meet different people in their line of duty so with this partnership we have told them to immediately report to us whenever they meet any suspected person”. Said Tcheleko

She further said the police officers have provided the phone numbers to the sex workers so that whenever they isolated they can be calling the police.

“We normally know that these sex workers isolated even when they come to report the challenges to the police by some officers hence we need to make sure they are welcome whenever they require our services”. She said.

And in her remarks chairperson for sex workers association in the district rose katsache commended salima police station for organizing the meeting saying the partnership will really help them.

“we face a lot of challenges even sometimes when we want complain at the station as some officers sideline us but we believe that with the coming of this relationship things will change”. Said Katsache

Salima district is one of the districts which have high population of sex workers who are operating in the district but with the coming of family planning association of Malawi FPAM in the district sex workers are now able to access heath services among others.
