WHAT OPENED THE DOOR FOR CHIEFS’ KHUNE AGAIN?

He wasn’t back in the starting XI, but something happened at Kaizer Chiefs that opened the door for Itumeleng Khune to get back into the matchday squad – what was it?
Khune finished 2019 with just two Absa Premiership appearances to his name as he battled shoulder and groin injuries, and he’ll be hoping for a much more fruitful 2020 as he approaches his 33rd birthday.
He took the first step towards his return as he was named on the bench for the 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United, however it may have been just because young Bruce Bvuma was unavailable for selection.
The club said on their official website, “Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has got a hamstring tendon strain. He was also scanned and assessed. He is currently also on a gym programme and is expected back on the field in 10-14 days.”
With Bvuma out for a couple of weeks during a busy period for the Glamour Boys, Chiefs fans may finally get to see Khune back in action this month after another lengthy spell on the sidelines, though Akpeyi does appear to have solidified his spot as Middendorp’s number one at present.
Chiefs have games against Highlands Park and Cape Town City coming up as they look to try and hold on to their place on top of the Absa Premiership table, but it remains to be seen if Khune will be given the green light ahead of Akpeyi in any of their upcoming fixtures.
